Born and raised in Cali, Columbia, Hernan Alvarez began his musical studies in the “Desepaz Children ‘s Orchestra and Choir” project, and continued his preparatory studies at the Antonio María Valencia Conservatory. Between 2013 and 2017 he carried out his undergraduate studies at the Conservatory of the National University of Columbia in Bogota under the tutorship of Cecilia Palma. In addition, Hernan holds a certificate in musical arrangements from the Martin Lutero University of Nicaragua, and he continues to be an active student of German Marcano.
He has participated as an active student and player in many music festivals, such as the Cartagena International Music Festival in Columbia, La Via Dei Concerti Festival, which took place in 12 European cities, the Aruba Symphony Festival, Mozarteum Summer Academy in Caracas and the Cello Lab festival, organized by the New World School of Arts in Miami, among others.
Since moving to The U.S in 2018, he has participated as a guest musician with different orchestras from the state of Florida; including the South West Florida Orchestra, Miami Symphony Orchestra, South Florida Orchestra, Florida International University (FIU) Orchestra. He served as assistant first cello of the Broward Pops Orchestra from 2020 to 2022 and as a percussionist of the independent project La Guacamaya collective, a percussion group focused on Colombian folklore. He plays as chamber musician for the event company Rock With You.
Another passion of his is education. Back in Columbia, he was part of the program “La Joven en Acción”, a project of social character, in which he got to travel through the country teaching Cello and music initiation to students from remote regions of Columbia while also maintaining a private studio in the city of Bogota. He has carried out his teaching work in the United States as an independent professor, and with educational institutions such as Simanof Orchestra Foundation and The Opera Atelier in Miami. Currently, he is the assistant principal cello of the Tampa Bay Symphony Orchestra
