She later relocated to Adana where she performed as principal cellist with the Cukurova Symphony and taught cello at the Adana State Conservatory. She also served as principal cellist for the Adana Symphony Orchestra and the New Adana Chamber Orchestra. She earned her bachelor’s degree in cello performance from Hacettepe University and then came to the U.S. on scholarship to study cello performance on the graduate level at Western Michigan University. Her experience also includes performances with numerous chamber groups, solo appearances, and orchestras.
Gonca has studied American cello style and the Suzuki method under Grace Field, Irene Sharp, and Rick Mooney, the French style with Ali Dogan, her professor in Turkey, and perfected her technique under the teaching of several European masters, including Andre Navarra and Roman Jablonski.
Gonca’s teaching experience includes all levels, from elementary school students to career-track university students to adult beginners. Her goal is to nurture each student’s natural talent and to build a lifelong love of music in them. She focuses on all aspects of music education, including technique, sight-reading, ensemble, ear training, performance, and memorization. She expects her students to be committed to their lessons and to invest the time and effort needed to sharpen their skills and enjoy the process!
Teaching methods include both Suzuki and traditional approaches. Gonca is certified Level 5 with Suzuki, but also offers traditional teaching methods for those who learn better in that format.
Gonca’s love of music and of the cello in particular is clearly evident in her playing. She speaks of her cello like an old friend, and believes in bringing the best out of every instrument and every student.
